For some reason when I first became aware of Meg and Dia I pictured a “nu-indie” Killers-esq. group that wore suits and looked like another recycled new wave fad-band. And because of this I unfairly judged them before I had even let a note pass my ear; until that is I actually gave them a chance and listened to their record Something Real and was proven wrong, which I must admit I am very glad about.
This is a very good release and nearly lives up to all its hype. Meg and Dia are showing some great potential and it clearly shows in this record. The first 3 tracks are some of their best and hook you immediately. The fourth “Indiana” tends to drag a bit and may leave you feeling less than satisfied in places but thankfully “Masterpiece” lifts it again and gets back on the track.
This is followed by (in my humble opinion) the best song of the whole album, “Rebecca”. It only has vocals and piano, but the lyrical story that is painted throughout the song gives it that something really special and this is a definite repeat track on this album.
Unfortunately, by the 9th song the album starts to drag and it doesn’t really pick up after that and I found myself a bit bored with the last 3 songs as they felt ever so slightly lack luster and didn’t really offer me as much as the previous tracks. But overall, this is a very good album and if you ignore all the hype and/or criticism about it and just give it a listen you might find that this is one of your favourite summer releases.
Standout Tracks: Rebecca, Roses, Monster, Cardigan Stars.
