Meg and Dia's "Our Home is Gone" is the best independently recorded album I've ever heard. Not only are the sisters extremely talented, they have a knack for composing the right music for the right lyrics.
I remember the first time I saw Meg and Dia perform. It was two years ago at a small church show. They were singers for a band called Cowards Courage. When I heard them perform, I knew that they would make it big. There was so much potential in their voice and lyrics, and I fell in love with them.
Now, Meg and Dia have this awesome 12-song album. They redid one of the Cowards Courage songs, "Santa Barbara," and included my favorite Cowards Courage song, "Nineteen Stars," a song about suicide and survival.
While the old is good, the new is even better. One the last songs on the album -- which is a shame because I think it should be first -- is "Strawberry Waltz." This song just has both sisters singing and an acoustic guitar. It's soulful and catchy, and I find myself listening to it on repeat constantly. The lyrics are: "And the unfaithful sun went to burn all alone, just for love/ Just for love/ Just for plain simply love." Dia's voice, and beautiful guitar playing harmonizes so perfectly.
Another one of my favorites is "Indiana," which was inspired by the book of the same name by George Sand. "Indiana" is a great song because it has an upbeat tempo, and catchy lyrics: "She's strong but an obedient wife/ I can do whatever I want like you/ She began to die/ Indiana that's not right." The song is a great representation of a book that's not only a love story, but about the submissiveness of women to men.
"Masterpiece," the first song on this album, has a sound that just pops and, again, great lyrics. These girls have some great ability for writing songs that can capture a moment in just a few minutes.
"How Much" is another one that really hits me, because it tells about struggle and feeling down, something all people feel once in a while.
Not only is this album a symbol of the ability for two girls to make their dreams come true, but there's something in these songs for everyone to connect with. Their songs are real, and the emotion they depict is real.
