The Veronicas. The Wreckers. Tegan and Sara. And now, Meg and Dia. XX-chromosomed duos are the new act de jour in the indie pop/rock scene today and the sisters are striking while the mike is hot with their new release, Something Real.

This duo ply a foggy medium somewhere between the bubblegum of The Veronicas and the dark soul of Tegan and Sara (leaning towards the more mature tendencies of the latter), with a blend of Dia on lead vocals, Meg and Kenji Chan on guitars, and unobtrusive thumps from Nicholas Price. Any other singer vocalizing the occasional paint-by-numbers pop sounds that are sprinkled throughout would motivate the quick punching of next track button. But, Dia Frampton has a fresh accented soprano that, when mixed with the backing vox of sister Meg and their adroit lyrics, makes those standard pop sounds listenable and inspires loud in-car, shoe-gazing sing-alongs with the standout tracks.

Like any album, Something Real has its likely singles like the dark-tinted "Monster" and grrrl power anthem "Indiana" loaded up front. But, the album is thick and blended evenly, offering savory slices to the very last bite. Deeper cuts like the vocal spotlight "Cardigan Weather" and the golden-harmonized "Setting Up Sunday" are foot tapping tunes that you’ll come back to again and again.

Genre: Pop/Rock
