Two Utah sisters were given the chance to live a young rock-'n'-roller's dream when their band joined the 2006 Vans Warped Tour. But their dream comes with a daunting schedule that requires them to play 100 times over 60 days this summer.
Meg & Dia is one of two MySpace headliner bands scheduled to perform at every Warped Tour destination, including the tour's upcoming stop at the Ladson Fairgrounds on Monday.
Megan Frampton, 21, and her sister, Dia, 18, have been playing music for more than 10 years.
The girls have participated in numerous bands and projects while trying to find the sound and style they liked the best. Over the past six years, the girls have performed metal, hard-core, pop and even country with groups of friends. Meg plays the guitar, and Dia sings vocals.
When Meg started taking classes at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, she realized that music was her calling. After a few semesters, she returned home.
The two sisters began an acoustic duo appropriately named Meg & Dia, performing in local gigs near their home in St. George, Utah. Eventually, the girls teamed up with their drummer, Nick Price, and begin performing more shows farther from home.
The girls describe their current sound as pop-rock with indie influences.
"If I had to pick, I think that we resemble Death Cab for Cutie, mostly because they have melodic vocals, and for us, the vocals are the main feature," Meg says in a telephone interview.
"A big influence of mine is The Cranberries, but I'm not sure if that shines through," adds Dia. "But they are my favorite band."
The girls were approached by a manager from Doghouse Records, which has signed bands such as The All-American Rejects and Limbeck. They were given a chance to showcase their music, and Doghouse executives were so impressed that the label quickly signed Meg & Dia.
"During the show, I thought we did horrible, but afterwards, we got a very positive response," says Meg. "The signing process came a lot faster than I expected, and since then, we have been going on tours."
The 2006 Vans Warped Tour will be Meg & Dia's fourth tour since being signed and the largest they've ever participated in. Meg & Dia will perform two shows a day at all 50 Warped Tour destinations.
They are one of the few bands that will be playing at every stop.
Despite the tremendous workload, the girls are enthusiastic.
"I'm really excited," says Dia. "I heard it will be a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. I'm also really excited to see the other bands, and watch how they work and see their mentality and meet lots of cool people."
"I'm not worried about it at all," adds Meg. "People we have talked to about Warped Tour have said we are never going to make it, but my sister and I can't wait to prove them wrong."
The band will release its first CD, "Something Real," on Aug. 8.
