Title: Doc Rok -- Tips for staying sane in a band
THIS MONTH: DEALING WITH YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS (AND SIBLINGS) ON THE ROAD, WITH DIA FRAMPTON (VOCALS) OF MEG & DIA
Keeping your sanity while touring in a van with four other people for weeks on end can seem impossible. It's hard being around the same people every day and even more difficult to be around your sister. Everything begins to bother you. They start to walk in an irritating way. The way they eat burritos or breathe begins to annoy you--they just breathe so loud! When this happens, you have to lie down fo ra while. Touring requires patience. It takes compassion and understanding of others' needs and feelings and little acts of kindness do wonders in the van. If I buy batteries for my sister's book light, have a read-aloud session with my drummer (who's driving), and share gummy bears with my fellow guitar player, suddenly I've got a pleasant ride to Seattle (or wherever). Once you remember all that, the harmony starts to come back, and you gain confidence that when you pat someone on the shoulder or reach for your laundry, your fingers won't get bitten off in the process.
